Tech-Pro StopAds helps block annoying adverts and popups, helps protect you from downloading hijackers and premium-rate diallers, and helps block undesirable content. It lets you download an updated list of sites to block, add and remove sites, and enable or disable blocking, all from a convenient system tray icon.
Tech-Pro StopAds works by replacing a system file called hosts. The hosts file acts as a look-up table to convert between machine names and their Internet addresses. By including in the hosts file the names of the sites or servers on the Internet that you want to block, and giving them an address which means "this PC", you can prevent web browsers and other Internet software from discovering the real addresses of these servers, and hence block access to them.
It's Windows that does the actual blocking. What StopAds does is make it easy for you to use a hosts file to block sites.
Tech-Pro StopAds requires the Tech-Pro Utilities Startup package to be installed. Tech-Pro Utilities are donationware - if you like them, please donate a few dollars.
