Editor review of Simpo PDF to Word |
2009-10-23 |
This program is supposed to let you convert .pdf documents to editable .doc (Microsoft Word) files, retaining the original formatting. You may want to convert a .pdf file for many reasons, the main of those being that .pdf files cannot be edited and are often poorly searchable. These documents often include a plethora of pictures, fanciful tables, and intricately formatted texts using a number of exotic fonts; it is the job of a pdf-to-word converter to apply a series of font substitution and text recognition techniques, combine them with several closely matching format templates, and thus render a .doc file that is very faithful to the original .pdf document, but at the same time easier to navigate and ready to be edited. Some pdf-to-word converters almost manage to fulfil this purpose (however imperfectly), but 'Simpo PDF to Word' simply fails.
For one thing, it offers a setting to retain the original layout of PDF documents or export them as plain text - which does not work altogether. No matter what you choose, the program tries to follow the original text placement and font styles (eventually failing to do both and leaving you with inconsistently italicised text on page margins). Secondly, the program does not use any text recognition. Nor, as a matter of fact, does it include original pictures in resulting documents - so you will often end up with bits of information missing. Thirdly, the program has got major problems with converting texts that contain non-ANSI characters, usually making whole passages unreadable.
'Simpo PDF to Word' may work for simple documents, but why bother buying a flawed converter at all when there are plenty usable ones for the same price? |
